Friday night, when we parked to go to the pub, we so happened to also park right next to a Subaru Impreza (not WRX alas). I took a couple of minutes to check it out. Pleasant, sporty car, good design internally, but nothing to write home about. I'm still undecided, there's something off about it. But the AWD in all models, plus the option of having manual, is quite, quite attractive. I'm particularly still puzzled a bit about the rear lights, as they look aftermarket or pimped in some way.
Then on Sunday we went to the movies to check out Inglorious Basterds. Two or three cars away from us was a dealership licensed Mitsubishi sportback (!). So I, of course, walked around it a couple of times and perused the interior from this side of the windows. Me likey! Fluid looking exterior, balanced, good cargo room, solid interior. It's so European looking for goodness sakes!
So what's the difference between a Subaru Impreza and a Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback? Not much. With the exception that all Subaru come with AWD, and the Lancer Ralliart Sportback is the one of only two types of Sportback models that comes with the AWD.
In addition to the AWD argument, Mitsubishi does have the upper hand in the looks section. The front looks aggressive yet stylish in that sharkish kind of Mitsubishi way. However, the paddles I spotted behind the Mitsu's steering wheel, looked, well, very toyish. Was it a dislike founded in the fact that I'm not the hugest fan of paddles to begin with? I'm not sure. The ones I saw in this particular model of Mitsu Sportback stuck out like a sore thumb--they were a wrong type of silvery-looking sort of plastic that contrasted oddly with the darker interior molding and color scheme.
