Toyota Halts 8 Models' Sales

Logo borrowed from Arabamoto.com

This is unprecedented and scary. Toyota has grown famous over the 80s, 90s, and 00s for their six sigma, kaizen, and just in time delivery. If you've ever heard one of their execs speak (as I have during a focus group I arranged in Washington in 2004) you'd see how seriously they take metrics, tracking, and benchmarking.

When a pedal problem is epidemic on at least eight models and they decide to halt sales until it gets fixed, you know this is being taken seriously. There is great coverage by NPR (Toyota Halts US Sales of 8 Popular Models, Toyota Halts Sales of Vehicles Hit by Recall) on this decision and how it impacts various plants and consumers.

Toyota has been the world's largest manufacturer of automobiles by sales, and the largest sales in the US. How will this affect the other car manufacturers' quality control measures? More importantly, how are current Toyota customers being reassured and taken care of?
